Know What to Look For in a Good Air Duct Cleaning Service

Most people aren’t very aware of how dirty the ducts of their heating and air conditioning systems can actually get, let alone what to look for in a company that will come in and perform the cleaning service for them. Cleaning the air duct system of your home is not something that you have to worry about every six months or even every year, some families go much beyond this before having a service come out and take care of the cleaning for them.

Dust, dirt, dead bugs and lord knows what else build up in your duct work over time and along with the changes in climate and levels of humidity; this can cause mold and mildew to form in the ducts of your system. This is important to take care of, but what should you look for in an air duct cleaning service to know that you are getting the best company for the job.

Firstly – you’ll want a company that’s licensed, bonded and insured. This way you’ll be assured that the servicemen have been properly trained to perform the work that you need done and that, in the unlikely event that something should go wrong, that the business has the insurance to protect whatever property of yours happens to have been damaged. An un-licensed contractor may very well quote you a lower price when it comes to servicing your heating and air conditioning system, but you’ll end up paying many times over when the job turns into disaster and there is no coverage for whatever happens to your home.

Secondly – you’ll want a company that uses the proper equipment. A good company will likely have the absolute state of the art air duct cleaning equipment on every service truck that they put on the road. It requires a lot more than just a shop-vac to properly clean a heating and air conditioning system, you don’t want someone with shoddy ineffective equipment charging you money to simply go though the motions of the cleaning without really removing any of the dirt and filth that is clogging up your ducts.

Thirdly – you’ll want to see references and testimonials of performance. A lot of people ask a contractor for references, but then never check them – this is a very important step when it comes to hiring a contractor to do any type of work on your home. A reference is the only way you can hear if the servicemen of the company that you are considering hiring do a good job, if they are professional and charge what their estimates say that they are going to charge. Representatives of the company will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your money, if a company can’t provide at least five verifiable references of their work, than your should seriously think twice about hiring them.

Last but not least, a certification. If a service company is certified with the NADCA, or National Air Duct Cleaners Association, then you can rest assured that they are licensed and trained properly to perform the work on your heating and air conditioning system. If you can’t find anyone that seems to be qualified or capable of doing the work that you want done in your home, then you can contact the NADCA and they will certainly recommend a licensed and insured contractor in your area that can handle the job.

You should never hire an air duct cleaning service, or any other contractor for that matter, to do work in your house based solely on the fact that they have the best price. There are many things that you need to consider before making your final decision – virtually all reputable service companies will give you a free estimate so you can get the best price, but just make sure that you settle for the best price from an air duct cleaning service that you can trust to do the work properly.

Air Duct Cleaning Improves Home Air Quality

Air duct cleaning is a service that many people do not think about nor give enough consideration to unless they have really sensitive allergies or smell a really bad odor in the house. Nevertheless, its something that every homeowner should consider getting at least once every three to fours years. Your air conditioning system, ventilation system, or heating systems collect a lot of bacteria, fungi, mold, and other contaminates over the course of several years that can greatly reduce the air quality in any typical home. When you get your system cleaned it removes 99.9% of these contaminates from your house or building greatly improving the indoor air quality.

What does it involve? When an air duct cleaning specialist comes to your house he or she will usually attach your whole HVAC system up to a specialized really strong vacuum. This vacuum puts your whole duct system under negative pressure and draws in all the dust and debris into it. Some things may be “stuck” to your system and the serviceman will use an “air whip” to agitate the contaminants and loosen them up so that they go into the vacuum. If you live in a really humid or rainy place like Oregon or Washington a lot of mildew can build up in homes so the serviceman will then proceed to scrub your system down with special anti-microbial chemicals especially formulated for air ducts. The procedure is designed to thoroughly clean your air ducts making them clear and particle free.

If done right the complete process should take three to four hours and will cost several hundred dollars for a medium sized home. There are a lot of ads out there that advertise cheap “$89” specials but its good to avoid these companies. They either do whats referred to as a “blow-and-go” job which is virtually worthless or they will bait potential customers with cheap introductory prices and then significantly add to the cost later. An established reputable company will charge at least $200-$300. Its an expensive service to get but definitely worth it.

Many people do not realize how bad their air quality was until they get the service done and actually breath fresh clean air. Living with bad air quality is not worth the savings. This service is easily passed over by most of the public but if you budget for it in advance you will be very pleased you did.

Finding an Air Duct Cleaning Service Provider

To find an air duct cleaning service provider, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends going through the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA), through whom you can find qualified HVAC technicians. Because air duct cleaning is a fairly new industry, consumers must watch out for providers who make promises about the benefits of duct cleaning, since no such claims have been approved by the EPA. The providers should not recommend duct cleaning as a routine procedure. They should make no guarantees about the improvement of your air quality, nor should they claim to be certified by the EPA.

The service provider should have experience working with your specific HVAC system. They should also have a special license, if required in your state, and should comply with NADCA standards. Perhaps most importantly, check the company’s references and see what other customers had to say. The EPA even recommends checking for complaints with your local Better Business Bureau. The best thing to do is compare at least three companies. Ask for each to provide you with a written agreement, outlining the service and the costs.

According to the EPA, you should expect the following from a reliable provider:

The provider should open access doors and ports, allowing for the entire system to be inspected and cleaned.

Before beginning any work, the provider should make sure there are no asbestos-containing materials in the heating/cooling system.

Only high-efficiency particle air (HEPA) vacuuming equipment should be used if the vacuum exhausts inside the home. Otherwise, they will use vacuuming equipment that exhausts outside of the home.

Carpet and furnishing should be protected.

The duct work should be protected. This includes sealing and re-sealing access holes that have been made by the provider.

Dust and other particles should be dislodged by well-controlled brushing in conjunction with contact vacuum cleaning.

The provider should use only soft-bristled brushes should be used on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts lined with fiberglass.

Some companies may advise the use of chemicals and biocides. Make sure the provider is willing and knowledgeable in explaining the effects of these chemicals. It is always recommended to do your own research and know the pros and cons when it comes to chemicals in your home.

The EPA has created a thorough and convenient post cleaning consumer checklist, which can be found here. After the cleaning, go through this list either on your own or with the provider. If you have any problems, the provider should take care of them at no cost.

Exploring The Reasons Behind Air Duct Cleaning

Air pollution takes place inside and outside of the home. Even new homes need to be inspected and cleaned due to construction dust. The time frames will vary from one home to the next according to the area you live in, if you have pets and how often you vacuum. When a vacuum is used often there will be less debris floating in the air collecting in the ducts.

Many homeowners and business owners as well do not realize that the ducts inside their establishments need to be cleaned. Part of this lack of knowledge is due to the fact that since you usually never see the inside of the air ducts you don’t realize just how much debris is collected inside of them. Even new homes and businesses have plaster dust, saw dust and other particles present in their homes.

Several areas of the country have serious problems with dust and smog and Los Angeles happens to be one of them. The alkali that is native to the area is very corrosive and can cause serious damage over a period of time.

Asthma sufferers should be particularly aware of the need to have the air ducts cleaned. The deposited debris can and does trigger asthma attacks, not only in humans but in cats and dogs as well.

Uncertainty in a decision to get your air ducts cleaned is very understandable. There is an expense to the procedure and of course a reputable service company will cost a fair amount, but with this expense to hire a professional company comes some contracted guarantees. The work that is performed will be exactly what they tell you it will be. If there are signs of mold, they will get a sample with you present and use a reputable laboratory to test the sample.

Still not certain that your air ducts need to be cleaned out? Speak to your Homeowner’s Insurance Agent and find out what they think and if they have a discount they can give you on your policy for the preventative maintenance you provide. A professional service will be able to present credentials that certify the work that they do.

How to Know If I Need My Air Ducts Cleaned

When not properly installed, maintained and operated, components of your heating and cooling system may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. Some of these components include supply and return air ducts and registers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, and condensate drain pans (drip pans).

When is it necessary to get your ducts cleaned:

– Upon inspection of the ducts, the registers have excessive amounts of dust, debris/particles and pet dander

– Ducts infested with pests (rodents, insects, etc.)

– To improve efficiency of your heating and air conditioning unit – air duct cleaning alone will not improve the efficiency of your unit, but should be done as you perform regular maintenance which should include a tune-up and filter change

– Mold Growth: you can request a video inspection of the ducts to show you the mold. Be aware that although a substance may look like mold, it should be confirmed by an expert and may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation

Things to consider when hiring a company for air duct cleaning:

– Do not allow the use of chemical treatments unless you fully understand the pros and cons

– Check references: ask to speak with satisfied customers to ensure they didn’t experience any problems with their HVAC system after the duct cleaning

– Contact the Better Business Bureau to check the company’s rating and any existing or previous complaints regarding their business practices

– Charges: if the company charges by the hour, request an estimate on the number of hours or days the job will take

It is recommended that you clean your air ducts every 2 to 3 years or as you see needed using our recommendations above, changing your air filter twice a year, and scheduling an HVAC unit tune-up once a year. The air duct cleaning process takes, on average, 2-4 hours and consists of using a combination of an air scrubbing brush and HEPA filtered vacuum. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) is a type of filter that can trap a large amount of very small particles that other vacuum cleaners would recirculate back into the air of your home.

It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned. In order to best determine if you need an air duct cleaning is to have a camera inspection of your air ducts.

At Bill Howe we want to make sure you have the most efficient running HVAC unit without enduring extra stress on your budget. While it’s important to take the necessary steps to make sure your heating and cooling system is ready for the next heat wave or cool season, we want to make sure you are aware of your options.

The Importance of Air Duct Cleaning in Humid Climates

“Air duct cleaning” is a common term for what is actually entire heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system cleaning. Duct cleaning by itself isn’t enough, particularly in a humid climate. The entire system, including the blower and coils must be cleaned periodically to maintain efficient operation. A clean air conditioning system helps you to breath easier, saves energy, and actually increases the ability of the system to cool your home or business.

Your heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system (HVAC system) not only cools the air, but also removes moisture, which is another important consideration in a humid climate. Warm moist air is drawn across the cold condenser coils removing heat from the air and causing the moisture to condense and run down into the condensate pan, reducing humidity levels.

Because of this condensing process, the coils almost always have some moisture on them, just as your bathroom mirror does after a hot shower. The moisture makes it more likely for dust particles in the air to stick to the coils, which are several rows deep. The heavier this build up becomes, the more it slows down the airflow across the coils, and reduces the amount of cooling and dehumidification that takes place. The dirt on the coils also insulates them and reduces the amount of heat and moisture they can remove from the air. Your HVAC system has to work that much harder to cool and dehumidify the air in your home.

These air ducts, with chilled air flowing through them to your wall registers, are also cooler than the surrounding air. When the system is not running, the moisture from the ambient air tends to condense on the insides of the air ducts. The same is true for the blower fan in your system. Dust particles tend to build up more quickly on these surfaces in a humid climate. The air you breathe is being blown over this dirt build up, which also makes the system less efficient.

Now you can see why in areas with higher humidity, air duct cleaning is essential to indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The dirt in your air conditioning system that decreases its efficiency is the same dirt that the air you breathe is flowing over. And the dirt builds up faster in these humid climates.

Duct cleaning alone is not enough to correct all of the problems and return your system to peak efficiency. Entire HVAC system cleaning on a regular basis is necessary to help you save energy and breathe easier.

Local Air Duct Cleaning

Unnoticed and unobtrusive as they are, air conditioning and air ducts are an integral part of your home and they often hold the key to your family’s health and quality of life. We need air, water, and food to survive, and air is the most important and essential ingredient among these. Read on to understand how regular local air duct cleaning can give you and your family health and longevity.

It is no secret that air contains hazardous substances such as a wide range of allergens, as well as radon gas that is carcinogenic and can cause cancer. Local air duct cleaning will ensure that your home’s air ducts are clear of built up materials that can pour a steady stream of harmful substances into your home. Local air conditioning repair goes hand in hand with local air duct cleaning and will ensure that there is no build up of dust, microscopic organisms and allergens or harmful chemical substances inside your air conditioning, the likes of which are often detected while carrying out local emergency air conditioning repair.

Do you remember the last time you had local heat pump repair and local furnace repair carried out? If you were present when this was done, you would have noticed the layers of accumulated dust and sediment inside the machinery, which go on to have a long-lasting health effect of those that reside or work within its vicinity. Local heat pump repair and local furnace repair should therefore be carried out regularly in order to mitigate their potential health hazards.

Dirty ducts also have another long-lasting impact: they drain your bank account. If local air duct cleaning is not carried out regularly, the cooling system will not last long and repairs and maintenance will add an extra burden to your finances. Dirty ducts also reduce air flow and slowly choke up the air conditioning, leading to increased heating and cooling bills, and an increased incidence of malfunctioning air conditioning, which will consequently increase your local air conditioning repair and local emergency air conditioning repair bills.

You should have your local air duct cleaning done right away if:

* You can see visible mold growth on the outside of the sheet metal or the hard surface, or on other components of the machinery such as the cooling system. You should be aware that many sections and components are not visible or accessible. The absence of visibly mold does not rule out the existence of mold or other substances.

* The ducts and other components appear to be infested with insects or vermin. This situation should be addressed immediately.

* You can see that the ducts are choked or clogged with debris, dust, or deposits of particles. This situation is especially hazardous as it can steadily release a stream of invisible particles into your home’s air, leading to long-term health problems in your family.

You can prevent all of these happening by having local air duct cleaning performed at regular intervals. Not only will it keep you and your family happy and save you much money, it will also give you lasting peace of mind.

Air Duct Cleaning Helps Keep Your Home Cleaner

Does it seem like every time you turn around your furniture is covered with dust again? If you are noticing that you need to clean your home more often just to keep the film of dust away, and frequently catch glimpses of swarms of dust particles in the air, it may not be your cleaning methods that are to blame. What is really behind the dust and dirt settling in your home on a daily basis could actually be a buildup of debris and contamination in your home’s heating and cooling unit and air duct system.

Your home’s heating and cooling system is more complex that you are likely to realize. Not just one piece, it is actually comprised of many components, all of which work together to control the temperature and relative humidity in your home so that it remains comfortable throughout the year. Within this system is the heating and cooling unit itself, which takes the air and either heats it or cools it, which is actually removing moisture and heat. Once the air has been processed it is forced through the air duct system so that it can be distributed throughout your home via the vents in each of the rooms. These vents are also responsible for taking air into the system so that it can be circulated. With this intake, however, comes contamination and debris.

An air duct cleaning professional can tell you that the average home suffers from poor indoor air quality as a result of a heating and cooling system that is improperly maintained and air ducts that are not kept clean. In fact, most homes have several inches of built up contamination and debris in the air ducts and clogging the components of the heating and cooling unit. Not only does this contribute to a variety of health concerns including respiratory infections, headaches, increased allergy symptoms and asthma attacks, but it also puts a strain on your home’s energy. A heating and cooling system that is clogged cannot operate properly and will require more energy in order to function. This increases your electricity bills and reduces the benefit of the system.

Of course, if the air in your home has traces of the debris and contamination that exist in your air ducts, this means that those particles that are not breathed in will settle on the surfaces of your furniture and your floor. Thorough air duct cleaning services will help you to put down the duster and spend your time enjoying the clean, comfortable air in your home.
